FieldTaxa User Manual

Complete guide to all features of the app

Introduction

FieldTaxa is a field observation app designed for naturalists, ecologists, and anyone who records sightings of fauna, flora, or other taxa.

Core Workflow

The core workflow is simple:

  • Capture a photo (or import one from your camera roll), or log a GPS-only observation
  • Classify it by placing it in your personal taxonomy tree
  • Track sightings — log each time and place you encounter that organism again, without needing to take a new photo

Key Principles

  • Local storage only. All your observations, taxonomy, and settings are stored on your device. No data is sent to any server.
  • No account required. FieldTaxa works entirely offline and does not require registration or a login.
  • Internet connection is only needed to display Swisstopo map tiles in the Map Overlay. No personal data is transmitted.

Navigation

FieldTaxa has four tabs in the bottom navigation bar:

TabPurpose
GalleryBrowse all your observations grouped by taxonomy
TaxonomyView and edit your personal taxonomy tree
SearchFilter observations by category and date range
SettingsLanguage, appearance, storage, and map options
The camera FAB (green circle button) in the centre of the navigation bar opens the Capture screen to add a new observation.
